If you look at a map, Kalispell, MT, is a dot just south of the Canadian border that sits at the junction of two squiggly yellow lines (highways) that wind through enormous swathes of green (national parks) and splotches of blue (lakes). Notable points of interest on the map have names like Lonepine, Lost Trail, and West Glacier.
It’s almost like the people who named these places were trying to make it sound as desolate as possible.
That’s my kind of place.

Celebrating A Long Past
Missoula, the cosmopolitan center of Western Montana, has a notably rich history. Located at the confluence of five mountain valleys and corresponding waterways, Missoula’s earliest inhabitants date back 12,000 years to end of the last ice age. Its native heritage can be attributed to the Salish, Kootenai, Pend d’Oreille, Blackfeet and Shoshone tribes with the first US citizens coming with the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
If you hang around Missoula much, you will hear the term Hellgate. Its origin comes from the narrow eastern entrance that was so strewn with human bones from repeated ambushes that French fur trappers would later refer to this area as the Gate of Hell and the term has stuck!
The establishment of Fort Missoula in 1877 to protect settlers further stabilized the economy but ironically become the site of the Italian Interment camp during World War II. They named the valley “Bella Serra” (beautiful view). The Railways brought rapid growth to the area and subsequently a maturing lumber industry.
The site of the state’s first university, The University of Montana, was established in 1893 and many a proud GRIZ has graduated from this fine and picturesque campus. During the last decade, the decline of the lumber industry and the rise of education and healthcare have become Missoula’s leading industries. St. Patrick Hospital and Health Center is the area’s only Level II Trauma Center. The city is also home to both Montana’s largest and oldest active breweries.
All of the five Missoula mountain valley drainages have a unique environment of their own. From the Rattlesnake to Grant Creek and South Hills to Pattee Canyon and Miller Creek, the Missoula Valley offers a youthful and vibrant lifestyle to all its citizens and visitors.

Top 5 Things REALTORS® Should Know About New FAA Regulations on Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)
The final rule encompasses much of what was contained in the proposed rule, and NAR is pleased with the overall outcome. The rule will lead to more predictability in the market for drone-based services and will create a broader base of trained operators and service providers. Specifically, the new rule:
- Education Provision: New certification for ‘remote pilot in command’ authority which is less burdensome than a pilot’s license. The test is administered at the FAA testing centers and is knowledge-based only. The cost is about $150, and will take about 20 hours of study time to prepare for. The test itself is 3 hours long. Operators will still need to pass a background check performed by the TSA.
- Flight Operations Permitted: Flights may be conducted during daylight hours, within visual line of sight, not directly over non-participants, altitude limit 400’, and 100 MPH max speed.
- Provisions for flight over non-participants will be addressed in the next rulemaking, microUAS, which was the subject of the March 2016 Aviation rulemaking committee.
- Daylight-only operations, or civil twilight (30 minutes before official sunrise to 30 minutes after official sunset, local time) with appropriate anti-collision lighting.
- Many of the operational requirements can be waived, which leaves room for innovation and experimentation with the technology.
- No provisions for notice to bystanders. This could present problems for operations in more dense areas, but REALTORS® can work with UAS service provider to find a solution.
- Rule will go into effect in August 2016.
