New Missoula City Park (Missoulian)

The new city park near Southgate Mall in Missoula will likely be open in the next year, thanks to an alternate construction bid strategy.

Monday night, the city council approved securing a construction contract by February before plans are finished, with construction planned to start in early summer and finish by September.

Ellen Buchanan, director of the Missoula Redevelopment Agency, said this leads to a more collaborative final design process between the city and the contractor, as well as being cheaper.

“Being able to price things in the winter months is very advantageous,” Buchanan said.

The method has been used by the MRA before, Buchanan said, during bidding for the Park Place garage and Mary Avenue construction.

The bidding procedure passed with one no vote from Ward 4 representative Jesse Ramos, who wanted to see a more traditional construction bid.

The MRA helped finance the $2 million purchase of the entire 12-acre triangular lot bordered by Johnson Street and North Avenue, to the west of Russell Street on the edge of the Franklin to the Fort neighborhood.

The park went through a couple of rounds of community review and planning in Fall 2017, which resulted in a concept plan with an off-leash dog park, pavilion and large open fields.

Elk Hunting a Product of The Seasons (Missoulian)

The anticipation of pursuing elk in Montana’s backcountry is enough to keep even the most seasoned hunter awake at night.

Images of calling in a bugling bull with flaring eyes and nostrils or settling the crosshairs behind the shoulder amid spitting snow makes the sweat and blisters well worth the effort. And a year’s supply of fresh elk steaks and burger isn’t bad either.

Last hunting season saw below average harvest primarily due to a warm and dry fall. Then a torrent of winter weather made access difficult in districts with so-called “shoulder seasons” which offer extended hunting for antlerless elk.

“Hunting especially for elk is weather dependent, and last year was a prime example of what happens when you have a hot and dry fall,” said John Vore, game management bureau chief with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. “It’s too nice during the general season so there wasn’t much of a harvest, and then the snow and cold made it really difficult for hunters to get around.”

Baltimore Ravens Offensive Coordinator Coaches Missoula’s Prep Quarterbacks! (Missoulian)

In between quarterbacking drills on Tuesday, former Griz great and current Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg had a challenge for his high school signal callers.

He wanted to see what tricks they could do with the football.

The prep athletes, decked out from head to toe in Adidas-provided camp gear, responded with their rendition. Footballs promptly scattered over the sprint-turf field at Missoula County Public Stadium.

It was a brief break at Mornhinweg’s Camp Marty Quarterback School, where QB’s from Missoula’s Class AA schools and Class B Loyola Sacred Heart worked on the finer points of quarterbacking from a coach who knows a thing or two about being under center.

The masses might know Mornhinweg for his fateful two-year stint as head coach of the Detroit Lions among his otherwise successful 24 years in the NFL as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator.

Montana football fans have even fonder memories.

As a junior in the 1982 season, he helped guide the Grizzlies to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs and Montana’s only Big Sky Conference title between 1970 and 1993. After the four-year starter graduated, the school record books read “Mornhinweg” next to career passing touchdowns, passing yards, completions, attempts and completion percentage.

It’s no wonder the NFL OC and his wife, Lindsay, love it here, too.

Snowmobile Hill Climb Returns To Lost Trail

For the first time since 2011, the fast and furious sport of snowmobile hill climbing will return to Lost Trail Powder Mountain March 11-12.

The event, sanctioned by the Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Hill Climb Association, is expected to draw racers from as far as Canada, Minnesota and Colorado.

“There will be a lot of local racers there, too,” said Heidi Peterson of Wisdom. “It should be really exciting.”

Peterson and her husband, MD, helped establish the first snowmobile hill-climbing event several years ago as a memorial to their friend David Shepherd, who died in an avalanche.

That event ended in 2011.

Poor snow conditions further south offered an opportunity for the Lost Trail ski area to consider hosting another hill climb this year. A race at Cherry Peak, Utah was cancelled due to a lack of snow for that March weekend.

Snow certainly isn’t an issue at Lost Trail. The ski hill’s summit currently has a 55-inch base and there is 47 inches at the lodge.

Those snow conditions should provide for a very steep, technical course with deep trenches by the finals on Sunday, Peterson said.

There will also be an amateur race if locals want to compete. There is a temporary membership fee to participate.

Races are scheduled to get underway at 8 a.m. both days. There is a $5 gate charge fee. Qualifying rounds are scheduled on Saturday with finals set for Sunday.
