New Missoula City Park (Missoulian)

The new city park near Southgate Mall in Missoula will likely be open in the next year, thanks to an alternate construction bid strategy.

Monday night, the city council approved securing a construction contract by February before plans are finished, with construction planned to start in early summer and finish by September.

Ellen Buchanan, director of the Missoula Redevelopment Agency, said this leads to a more collaborative final design process between the city and the contractor, as well as being cheaper.

“Being able to price things in the winter months is very advantageous,” Buchanan said.

The method has been used by the MRA before, Buchanan said, during bidding for the Park Place garage and Mary Avenue construction.

The bidding procedure passed with one no vote from Ward 4 representative Jesse Ramos, who wanted to see a more traditional construction bid.

The MRA helped finance the $2 million purchase of the entire 12-acre triangular lot bordered by Johnson Street and North Avenue, to the west of Russell Street on the edge of the Franklin to the Fort neighborhood.

The park went through a couple of rounds of community review and planning in Fall 2017, which resulted in a concept plan with an off-leash dog park, pavilion and large open fields.

Tips To Make Your Home Brighter – Steve Asbell

Dreading the end of Daylight Saving Time? Trick your way into a brighter space — even when the natural light prospects are dim.

Whether you live in a large home with a dark interior or a small apartment with only one window, follow these tips to bring in more sunshine — or at least make it look that way.

Paint it light and bright

Colors and values are nothing more than the light that reaches our eyes after bouncing off objects.

The amazing thing about white is that it reflects most of the light that hits its surface, creating the illusion of light. Case in point: that glowing ball in the sky we call the moon.

Paint colors that are saturated yet light in value create a similar effect, while lending their own distinctive personalities to a space.

Keep the contrast

A kitchen with white cabinets, countertops, walls and backsplashes is about as bright as it gets, yet the lack of variety can leave the overall effect a bit dull.

Strategically place mirrors

Don’t get so carried away by the excitement of your next home that you forget to account for the cost of leaving your current one. Make sure you are financially ready to buy a home and know exactly how much you can spend on a house. Hiring professional movers? Save up cash to cover the cost of packing up and hauling your stuff away.

You should also invest a little to get your current place ready for prime time. Linda recommends focusing your home-improvement dollars on these areas:

Elk Hunting a Product of The Seasons (Missoulian)

The anticipation of pursuing elk in Montana’s backcountry is enough to keep even the most seasoned hunter awake at night.

Images of calling in a bugling bull with flaring eyes and nostrils or settling the crosshairs behind the shoulder amid spitting snow makes the sweat and blisters well worth the effort. And a year’s supply of fresh elk steaks and burger isn’t bad either.

Last hunting season saw below average harvest primarily due to a warm and dry fall. Then a torrent of winter weather made access difficult in districts with so-called “shoulder seasons” which offer extended hunting for antlerless elk.

“Hunting especially for elk is weather dependent, and last year was a prime example of what happens when you have a hot and dry fall,” said John Vore, game management bureau chief with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. “It’s too nice during the general season so there wasn’t much of a harvest, and then the snow and cold made it really difficult for hunters to get around.”
